A public inconvenience: better toilets for inclusive travel

This coproduced study drew on the United Nations Convention Rights of Persons with Disabilities to inform a Human Rights-based design. Using photographic images and reflective diaries, twelve participant co-researchers investigated quality public toilets when travelling in Scotland for people dementia other physical cognitive impairments. Data were analysed using constant comparison critically reflexive, group enquiry produce contextualised evidence toilet utility from user perspective. Essential themes revealed major challenges associated accessibility, usability design, emphasising distressing sensory experience confronted an inadequate or inaccessible toilet. Substantial overlap needs was demonstrated but few unique requirements aligned specific disabilities recorded attention. Our findings highlight two key issues: 1) existing Standards are often unmet; 2) current require review endorsement by who represent full range access needs.Points InterestThis article reports co-production that researched critical issue accessible provision disabled carers travelling.As integral team researchers, (including dementia) played catalytic role directing research outcomes demonstrating meaningful involvement seldom heard groups research.Findings accentuate high emotional costs provision.We identified substantial different impairments seeking find use detected disabilities.
